Establishing Mocap Studio for New Digital Tech Campus

USP College had identified Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Emerging Reality (XR) as key tech trends crucial to forging a better future.

The Issue

To ensure they could equip the next generation of students they needed to create a purpose built, revolutionary digital technologies centre at their Canvey Island campus in Essex.

The core ethos of the XTEND Digital College is to provide students with training in an authentic business environment, something they aim to achieve by seeking client-led briefs and projects within AR, VR and XR to allow all student work to be set by employers.

The solution Nestled between the Client Briefing Room, the Volumetrics Studio and the Emerging Tech Centre, is the newly built Motion Capture (Mocap) Studio.

London-based mocap specialists Target3D created the studio with a state of the art 20-camera OptiTrack PrimeX22 system for the stage which was designed as a multi-purpose motion capture space, future-proofed for the college's evolving needs including performance capture and robotics.

The new motion capture studio offers the capacity to track the body, facial and fingertip movement of up to four students at one time, wearing full body tracking suits, when it opens in the Autumn term.

The result

The XTEND campus, will offer courses including Digital Innovation & Extended Reality and is set to be the first academic institution in the UK with an on-campus volumetric capture studio, mocap facility and Teslasuits for creating and experiencing content.
